GATLINBURG May, 1981
Karen and I made our second trip to Gatlinburg. This time, we saw Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Tennessee. From the observation tower, the panorama of green trees was impressive. We hiked again to Cades Cove, a 5 mile walk round-trip.
We went to Oak Ridge, built for the purpose of working on the atomic bomb, the so-called Manhattan Project. We saw the world's first nuclear reactor, operated between 1943 and 1963.
GATLINBURG May, 1979
My third trip here was an enjoyable one. Karen and I absorbed the mountain beauty! The town sits on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We hiked to Abrams Falls in Cades Cove. The road to Clingmans Dome was closed. The Smokies are part of the Appalachian range.
I went to Gatlinburg with my parents in 1964 and again in 1972.
